Designing Terror

My Portfolio Center schoolmate, Sam Potts, is featured in the New York Times' Op-Art article debating the merits of the Homeland Security Terror Alerts levels, and features New York designers offering up their own solutions. Sam's version tracks the changes in the alert level, so you know when to pay attention, rather than staying in a constant state of alarm.

Her surprising defeat by young upstart Oudin aside, I'm loving Sharapova's US Open looks this year (note the cute matching jackets)... Think I can get away with the dusty pink-and-flourescent green number off the court?

Homespun

Maxine Sutton creates using a blend of techniques like hand-embroidery and screenprint and a variety of sustainable materials, like organic cotton and vintage fabrics. The lovely spoons are filled with French lavender. You can find them in her shop.

Charm and Cheer

Absolutely charming work by Dolci Odille (which translates to sweet fortunate girl!). Letterpress and screenprinted items, in addition to amazing handmade fabric flower garlands. I totally want one of these to hang in my modest little studio space, although it would be a shame not to show it off for a special event. So cheery!! I'm also in love with the custom screenprinted buttons, a wonderful idea that adds a unique personal touch to an event without becoming too precious.

Lots and Lots of Dots

Today's inspiration: artist Tamar Cohen. From her well-put artist's statement:

"Two life-long passions that drive my work are my love of polka dots and my ongoing enthusiasm for vintage paper ephemera and books. I use collage and silkscreen to combine and juxtapose the two, creating a dynamic visual world of layered contrasts. This palette of visual obsessions inspires me in many ways, as I explore the relationship between high and low, order and chaos, the abstracted and the everyday. I also strive to push and challenge the boundaries of conventional printmaking: I paint with paper."

Yes, it's true, I have a penchant for all things kitty. Or owl-y. Or bunn-y. And I DO generally try to restrain myself from oohing and ahhing too much over all things cute. But these... who could possibly resist these friendly egg-shaped kitty crayons?!? Look at them, just look at them, sitting there all polite and patient in their little egg carton pods, waiting to create art with you! It's futile to resist their charms. I give in.
